Bangladesh Crumble in 1st ODI! 7 Wickets Fall in 26 Balls, Sri Lanka Win by 77 Runs
Bangladesh lose 7 wickets for just 5 runs chasing 245, as Sri Lanka seal the 1st ODI with a 77-run win. Hasaranga, Asalanka star in Colombo.

Colombo : Bangladesh’s promising start crumbled into a dramatic collapse as Sri Lanka secured a 77-run victory in the first One Day International at the R. Premadasa Stadium on Wednesday. Chasing a modest target of 245, the visitors were comfortably placed at 100 for 1 before losing seven wickets for just five runs in 26 deliveries, ultimately folding for 167.
It was a catastrophic middle-order implosion that turned what appeared to be a routine chase into a resounding defeat.
Shanto Run-Out Triggers Collapse
The turning point arrived with the dismissal of Najmul Hossain Shanto, who had looked in commanding form during a fluent 71-run partnership with opener Tanzid Hasan. Attempting a risky second run, Shanto was caught short by a sharp throw from debutant Milan Rathnayake, ending his promising knock and Bangladesh’s stability.
That moment opened the floodgates, as the Bangladeshi middle order fell apart under pressure.
Spin Duo Dismantles Bangladesh
Sri Lanka's spin attack, led by Wanindu Hasaranga and Kamindu Mendis, took full advantage of the opening. Hasaranga, in particular, had a night to remember, registering figures of 4 for 10 and achieving a personal milestone — 100 ODI wickets, becoming the second-fastest Sri Lankan to reach the landmark in just 64 matches.
Hasaranga struck twice in his first over, trapping Litton Das leg-before for a duck and then dismissing Tanzid, who top-scored for Bangladesh with 62, thanks to a brilliant catch by Janith Liyanage.
Kamindu Mendis, the ambidextrous spinner capable of delivering both off-spin and left-arm orthodox, added three wickets, his variations proving too much for Bangladesh’s middle order to handle.
Earlier, Sri Lankan captain Charith Asalanka held the hosts’ innings together with a composed century. Walking in at 29 for 3, Asalanka steadied the ship with a blend of caution and aggression, scoring 106 off 110 deliveries. Despite losing partners regularly, he guided Sri Lanka to a competitive total of 244 all out in 49.2 overs.
His knock ultimately proved decisive, as no other batter crossed fifty. Asalanka was named Player of the Match for his efforts.
Penalty and Discipline
Sri Lanka were docked five penalty runs for a slow over rate, as they failed to start the 36th over of Bangladesh’s innings within the required timeframe despite two prior warnings. However, the penalty had no bearing on the result.
Post-Match Reactions
Speaking after the match, Bangladesh skipper Mehidy Hasan Miraz acknowledged his team’s shortcomings.
“We started off well, but the run-out of Shanto was the turning point. Our middle order couldn’t handle the pressure. We need to learn from this and bounce back quickly,” he said.
On the other side, Asalanka credited Sri Lanka’s fielding and composure:
“We were a few runs short but backed our bowling and fielding. The team showed great spirit today. We’ve been consistent in ODIs, and this is another step forward,” he noted, referencing Sri Lanka’s recent wins over Australia and India.
The second ODI of the three-match series will be played at the same venue on Saturday, with Bangladesh needing a win to keep the series alive.
